Practice MCAT Question - Q133 - Answer!

The afferent arteriole, which brings blood to the glomerulus, has a wider diameter than the efferent arteriole, which carries blood away from the glomerulus. How does this arrangement contribute to kidney function?

A.  It enhances filtration.
B.  It enhances reabsorption.
C.  It enhances urinary secretion.
D.  All of the above

The correct answer is (A). By having more blood enter the glomerulus (via the efferent arteriole) than can leave at the same time (via the efferent arteriole), pressure within the glomerulus builds up so that efficient filtration can take place.
