MCAT Question A Day - 4/15/14 - Answer!

Two point charges attract each other with a force of 3.6 x 10-6 N when they are 3m apart. What is the force if the distance is increased to 6m?

A.  It is tripled.
B.  It is reduced to one-ninth.
C.  It is quadrupled.
D.  It is quartered.

The correct answer is (D). The force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the point charges. Since the distance is doubled, the force must be quartered.
