MCAT Question A Day - 10/3/14 - Answer!

The wolf, or Canis lupus, is a member of the family Canidae. Which of the following is most likely to be true?

A.  There are more living organisms classified as Canidae than as Canis.
B.  There are more living organisms classified as lupus than as Canis.
C.  An organism may be classified as Canis but not as Canidae.
D.  An organism may be classified as lupus, but not as Canis.

A is correct. Remember: Darn King Phillip Came Over For Good Soup. Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. The epithet Canus lupus indicates that the wolf is genus Canus and species lupus. Family is a broader category than either genus or species, so any organism that is of the species lupus, must also be Canus and canidae.
