MCAT Question A Day - 4/1/14 - Answer!

A student wishes to find the solubility of Ba(IO3)2, for which Ksp = 1.6 x 10-9. If x represents the solubility, which equation should she solve?

A.  1.6 x 10-9 = (x)(x)
B.  1.6 x 10-9 = (x)(2x)
C.  1.6 x 10-9 = (x)(x)2
D.  1.6 x 10-9 = (x)(2x)2

The correct answer is (D). If “x” equals the solubility of Ba(IO3)2, then [Ba2+] = x and [IO3 -] = 2x.
