Practice MCAT Question - Q27 - Answer!

The electrostatic force between two point charges is F. If the charge of one point charge is doubled and that of the other charge is quadrupled, the force becomes which of the following?

A.  1/2F
B.  2F
C.  4F
D.  8F

The correct answer is (D). From Coulomb’s law, F = k(q1q2)/r2, force is directly proportional to the product of the charges:

q1q2 = (2q1)(4q2) = 8q1q2

The product increases eightfold and so does the force
