MCAT Question A Day - 3/8/14 - Answer!

The solubility product for BaSO4 is 1.5 x 10-9. Which of the following is correct?

I. The solubility of BaSO4 in pure water is greater than the solubility in 0.1 M Ba(NO3)2.
II. The solubility product of BaSO4 in pure water is greater than the solubility product in 0.1 M Ba(NO3)2.
III. The reaction of Ba2+ with SO4-2 has an equilibrium constant greater than 1.0.

A.  I only
B.  II only
C.  III only
D.  I and III only

The correct answer is (D). II is ruled out because the solubility product, unlike the solubility, does not depend on concentration.
